Picture of Paradise

Today's "Picture of Paradise" is courtesy of Windwardskies Photography. Plumerias grow so abundantly here in Hawai'i that they seem to naturally represent our beautiful islands. However, these flowers are not native to Hawai'i and come from Mexico and Central America. We are lucky to live a in climate that supports the growth of these sweet and fragrant flowers.

Aloha Friday Recipe!!

Here is another 4 meals in 4 minutes™ meal! I have three children (age 5 and under) and being able to get my meal prepared and cooking quickly is the best thing in the world to me. I really value being able to provide my family with a home-cooked meal and everyone sitting around the table to enjoy it. Homemade Gourmet has allowed me to do this with the 4 meals in 4 minutes™ meals. I also get my children to help. My 5 y.o. son can measure the ingredients. Then both my 5 y.o. son and my 4 y.o. daughter can mix the ingredients together for me using the method below! Plus there is NO MESS to clean up that usually happens when little ones get in the kitchen.

Mahalo & enjoy!!

Hawaiian Pork Chops

Ingredients
3 pounds pork chops*
4 tablespoons Homemade Gourmet® BLT seasoning (or one package)
1 15-ounce can pineapple tidbits
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon soy sauce

Directions
This is another great 4 meals in 4 minutes™ meal!

Place all ingredients into the freezer bag. Seal and SMOOSH!

Before freezing, label as Hawaiian Pork Chops and list cooking options:

BAKE: Thaw and bake (covered) at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

GRILL: Thaw, discard marinade, and grill over medium high heat until chicken juices run clear.

SLOW COOK: Defrost enough to empty contents into slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours.

*You may substitute the chicken with 6 boneless, skinless, chicken breasts for a variation on this recipe . . . make both and fill your freezer twice as fast! This has about 150 calories per serving if using skinless chicken breast!

Such is the situation with a newly published paper about the Hawai'ian Honeyeaters. About WAHMS

Everyone has dreams about working from home. As work at home moms, we get many of our business ideas and inspiration from the things that we have passion for. For example, love that perfume...I bet I could get others to buy it too. Or, I know a lot about books - I'm sure I could promote reading and sell books. But as many experienced WAHMs know, loving a product or service does not make you a successful WAHM.

We have learned that an important element in success is market research. Start from the beginning and do your research. Find out what sells and what does not. You can start by doing research on the internet or even do a Google search on your product and see what kind of competition is out there. By finding about your competition, you'll be aware of the kind of promotion and work you need to do to get your name out into the public eye. Don't assume that your passion will drive others to buy your product. This is knowledge gained through our own personal experiences.

If only we had someone to tell us this in the beginning - before we started! Unfortunately, we don't have the daily support of colleagues and may find ourselves working alone most of the time. And like all parents we juggle the schedules of our family along with our work. When business does not live up to our expectations, we often feel like giving up and many of us do. We don't have encouragement from co-workers or bosses. We don't have the push for training or opportunities to better our skills and knowledge - everything comes from within. Our own commitment and desires push us forward. When you feel like you've hit a dead end, it can be very discouraging not to have answers and not knowing where to go from there.

It's important for WAHMs to network, share ideas and provide encouragement and feedback to each other. We hope if you're a WAHM here in Hawaii, you'll consider joining our group to share your area of expertise with us or maybe you could even learn a little here too.

If you're not a WAHM but know of resources where we can enrich ourselves in this ever changing business environment, we'd love to hear from you!

Thank you to those who read our blog! Thank you to our customers. You are our inspiration and our hope!

Mommy Care

Yesterday at the doctor's office, I noticed a lot of women bringing kids in for an appointment or accompanying an elderly family member. I, too, was running around and bringing in my child for a doctor's visit after picking up another one early from school. Sometimes mommies get so busy caring for our family that we forget to take care of our own health. We get our dose of morning coffee and off we go! I wanted to let you know of a free magazine subscription issued by Kapiolani Medical Center announcing the lastest in women's health issues. Read about weight management, healthy recipes, doctor check-ups and get a listing of classes that include skin care & beauty, excercise, massage, stress management and more. Some of the classes are free while others require a small registration and/or supply fee.

You can get your subscription here at http://www.kapiolaniwoman.org/ or by calling 535-7000.

Nature Hotel

My Hawaii, or aptly named “Nature Hotel” by my daughter, is an archipelago paradise located in the central Pacific Ocean. It has eight main “wings”: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Hawaii and waterway corridors full of nautical wonders.

Being Kamaaina, or locally born and raised, often the beauty around me is taken for granted and I become indifferent to the sights that surround me. Not too long ago I was given the opportunity to “play tourist” at the Nature Hotel and I was able to appreciate the splendor of the islands once again. In fact, I felt “so lucky to live Hawaii” that it inspired me to write this piece.

A whale watching boat ride with “Safari Boat Excursions, Maui Whale Watch” off the Lahaina Harbor on Maui made for an awe-inspiring adventure. We embarked on a boat that permitted up to 18 passengers thus giving everyone an opportunity to view the magnificent humpback whales. We zoomed along the bumpy blue waves and the skillfulness of the captain made it possible for us to get in close proximity to a mama whale, her calf and their male primary escort. The whales were gigantic and incredible; the boat ride was exhilarating!

Kaanapali Beach, also on Maui, had friendly waves for the kids and the best sand for constructing sculptures. Even if you have never made a sand castle in your life, an architectural design with Kaanapali Beach’s fine, moldable sand is promising. It is a fabulous way to spend a relaxing day.

Just recently, I went on a hike with friends to the lighthouse at Kaena Point Natural Area Reserve, the western most tip of land on Oahu. Kaena Point, according to my friend, is a sacred spot where ancient Hawaiians souls would jump off the perilous cliffs to meet their ancestors in the spirit world. This legend is dramatic and so is the landscape. The craggy, wild coastlines with waves thundering in the coves below were breathtaking and stunning. The hike brought us face to face with a charming albatross chick so chubby, downy and undaunted by our presence. We were also fortunate to observe an endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal and her pup sunbathing on the rocky shore.

Like all places, even Nature Hotel has its risks; therefore, if you ever plan a hike or sightseeing activity be sure to make inquiries and prepare carefully.

Aloha!
